They tell of forced conscription, the suppression of the Macedonian language, the changing of names and villages, imprisonment, political persecution, partisan warfare, refugee camps and families torn apart for decades.

There are stories of children fleeing across borders with little more than the clothes they wore; of mothers holding families together through war and exile; of men fighting in armies and causes they did not choose; and of migrants rebuilding their lives thousands of kilometres from the villages they still called home.

Many eventually found a new beginning in Australia, where they built families, churches, clubs and communities while carrying with them the language, identity and memories of Macedonia.
