Sometimes they grow into monumental mountains of historical significance and everyone even the uninformed hums a tune about it. John Francis Dowling rode out on his trusty steed from the Paroo with his black pilot beside him hoping to make a line to Mt Murchison Station on the Darling. The country was dry and drought had set in. What did he have to fear, only fear itself? He was a bushman. The sun rose gently from the east, southward was his bearing. The morning was cool and all seemed fair and still. Onwards they went and on the fourth day he wrote his log up only to say the blacks could tell him "no more about the springs." He was lost. He never returned. Dowling was found murdered by the blacks. His trusty guide in a moment of madness struck him about his head and crushed his skull and then decamped. How many times must this situation have repeated itself during the early settlement of Australia, no one knows? Arising out of this small tragedy, 300 Aborigines were said to have been massacred by the whites.

This book is an attempt to tell that story as best one can with the information that still exists. It’s a simple story but the problem nowadays is by what yard stick should it be told. Should we see it as the loss of a pioneer attempting to settle the Australian outback, attempting to advance Australia. Or is the real story the relentless march of the white man’s livestock trampling the flora and fauna and encroaching on koori country. Who should come first the wool or the environment? John Dowling had a job to do. He never expected to be killed in carrying out the ambitions and aspirations of the white citizens of Queensland. On the other hand, the intrusion of foreign squatters onto the fields and streams of the outback has left a lasting trail of regret in the minds of some.

The History of Bêche-de-mer Fishing in Queensland Waters and Adjacent Islands by Paul Dillon

Paperback, 160 pages, $34.95

ISBN 9781922815415

Bêche-de-mer is an edible sea creature used to make soup. During the colonial period of Queensland’s history, Aboriginals were employed to harvest the animals at low tide amongst the coral reefs of Torres Strait and the Great Barrier Reef. With their ancient maraes falling into disrepair, their lonely graves neglected, and their monuments to European dreams deteriorating, the Society Islands anticipated what was to come in the Marquesas. Anticipated but did not fully prepare Donna and Greg for the experiences that awaited them at the end of December 1974 and the beginning of January 1975 on the islands of Hiva Oa, Tahuatu, Ua Huka, Nukuhiva and Ua Pou.

In the Marquesas, Greg later reflected, the silence of the land enveloped them both and made them conscious of being intruders. Donna had two purposes in keeping a journal. She signals them in the opening sentence of her first entry, penned in Sydney just before flying out to French Polynesia. ‘If I want to write this like a novel, gracefully’, she writes, ‘I want to begin with Greg.’ Greg had been appointed in 1971 Max Crawford Professor of History at his alma mater, the University of Melbourne, where Donna was also a recent appointment. Both had established reputations as fine historians. Donna for her 1973 publication Boston Priests, 1848-1910: A Study of Social and Intellectual Change, and Greg for The Marquesan Journal of Edward Robarts (1974) together with his paradigm-shifting articles on the Pacific and on the sociology of knowledge, especially historical knowledge. For both, their best-known history writing was ahead of them; in Donna’s journal we gain a taste of the flavor of what was to come. For Donna, the voyage to Tahiti and the Marquesas was an opportunity to experiment with a more adventurous and unorthodox form of writing history – ‘like a novel, ‘gracefully’, as she says in her opening journal entry. Her journal, then, might be read as a precursor for the kind of transformative writing style that characterized her later award-winning histories – Possessing Albany, 1630-1710: The Dutch and English Experiences (1990), Death of a Notary: Conquest and Change in Colonial New York (1999), The Shame and the Sorrow: Dutch- Amerindian Encounters in New Netherland (2006), and Stuyvesant Bound: An Essay on Loss Across Time (2013). Keeping a journal was also an opportunity for Donna to record her affection and admiration as well as sense of responsibility for Greg. The first entry, for 11 December 1974, records how being with Greg holds her ‘excited & so happy’, how the hours are ‘luminous … with Greg looking young and suntanned’, how he buys her chocolates and beams to see her in her straw hat. ‘I am still not able to connect beauty (Beauty) with a God’ she writes, ‘only Greg’. Peter Reith AM, Former Australian Minister for Defence

Charlie Hardy was a blacksmith’s assistant from Sydney, Australia. In his War Diaries he recorded his progress from a happy-go-lucky boy to a hard-bitten, military veteran in that terrible conflict, the Great War of 1914-1918. At Gallipoli he writes the words: “Allah Allah they yell & when they know they are beaten they throw down their arms and want to be taken prisoners but Australians don’t take Prisoners”. Charlie was an ordinary man involved in extraordinary events and this book weaves his diary entries into a comprehensive and informative history of the War – particularly the Gallipoli Campaign and the tragic Battle of Fromelles which was the worst single day in Australian military history. Charlie participates in the famous, heroic rear-guard action during this Battle, helping save hundreds of Australian lives, made even more poignant by the historical coincidence that Adolf Hitler was in opposing trenches to Charlie’s company.

Albania : Escaping the East, Aspiring for the West by Perparim Xhaferi

Paperback, 264 pages, $39.95

Published in Jan 2021

ISBN: 9781922449436

Perparim Xhaferi’s book Albania: Escaping the East, Aspiring for the West is a timely reminder that this small Balkan country with an Eastern history but Western aspirations remains a potentially important player in the Eastern Mediterranean. With its unique historical relationship to Turkey, despite almost half a century of communism, Albania remains uniquely placed to understand Turkish influence in the contemporary environment. However, for Albania to become a player between West and East, rather than a pawn in the politics of its more powerful neighbours, the nation must come to terms with its Ottoman heritage as well as its immediate communist past. Dr Xhaferi’s insightful analysis covers the important points in the formation of the Albanian nation before focusing on the relationship to Turkey, past and present. Xhaferi casts a critical eye over those aspects of the Ottoman heritage that still exercise influence in Albania and that are in danger of being instrumentalized by a newly powerful Turkey attempting to consolidate a regional presence beyond its immediate borders and to the north of Greece. With his coverage of the cultural aspects of Albanian identity, in particular in his analysis of the work of leading author and public intellectual, Ismail Kadare, Xhaferi provides a unique perspective on Albania as it reshapes itself after a calamitous twentieth century and in the context of potential membership of the European Union in the twenty-first.

-- Professor Peter Morgan, Director, European Studies Program, The University of Sydney

pol-pot-solved-the-leprosy-problem-remembering-colonial-and-post-colonial-worlds-1956-1981-by-milton-osbourne
Pol Pot Solved the Leprosy Problem : Remembering Colonial and Post-Colonial Worlds 1956-1981 by Milton Osbourne

Pol Pot Solved the Leprosy Problem : Remembering Colonial and Post-Colonial Worlds 1956-1981 by Milton Osbourne

Paperback, 280 pages

ISBN 9781925501803

$39.95

March 2018

In his abundant, deft and absorbing body of work Milton Osborne has deepened and expanded our knowledge of Southeast Asia. It is a book where mordant humour is present but tragedy is all too often the dominating theme of life under Norodom Sihanouk, Cambodia’s mercurial leader, and then Pol Pot’s tyranny. With scholarly acuity, this work skilfully uncovers how great thinkers in Western Civilization understood the cultural importance of these self-evident truths to society and good governance under the rule of law. At a time when perhaps we need it most, Zimmermann shows how Christian ideas like ‘natural law’, ‘natural rights’ and ‘natural justice’, contributed to the development of the common law. In doing so, Dr Zimmermann’s work convincingly confirms for us that ideas informed by the Bible influenced in important ways the development of the Common Law, and indeed, the preservation of freedom and justice. Woven through the very readable chapters of this book is a profound understanding of an ancient sacred premise: God revealed moral absolutes in His Word, and placed these truths on the human heart”.

--William Wagner, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Law, Western Michigan University, U.S.A., Former U.S. Federal Judge & U.S. Diplomat, President, Salt & Light Global

“Professor Zimmermann’s book is striking in its depth and breadth. Not since Harold Berman’s volumes on Law and Revolution has such a mammoth task been undertaken. Berman’s positive influence is clear in the way Zimmermann systematically and incontrovertibly demonstrates the Christian roots of the common law in Australia, England and the US. Yet Zimmermann goes further than Berman in at least two respects. First, he delves deeply into three particular jurisdictions and focuses on influential political figures in an enlightening way. Second, Zimmermann skilfully takes into account recent developments in Western politics and culture and a broad range of contemporary scholarship in theology, legal theory and history, philosophy and constitutional law. This book is therefore informative for scholars and laity alike, and essential reading for a legal community which seems content to drift ever further from its Christian origins. I highly recommend it.”

-- Dr Alex Deagon FHEA, Senior Lecturer in Law, Queensland University of Technology, Author of ‘From Violence to Peace: Theology, Law and Community’

“Professor Augusto Zimmermann has produced an extremely helpful book in which he carefully demonstrates the indissociable Christian origins of the common law. It is popular today to attempt to whitewash the positive influence of religion not only from the present but also from the past. The idea that law is morally neutral and that religion generally and Christianity, in particular, is a force of evil and not good has become popular in Australia’s mainstream press and embraced by politicians and academics. In this excellent book, Dr Zimmermann carefully lays out for the reader an easily digestible and highly readable account of the Christian roots of the common law in England, the United States and Australia. His book is a very valuable addition to Australian works on legal history and will assist not only lawyers and law students but all interested readers to better understand why our legal system is as it is. Zimmermann’s study brings together not just the best historical, legal, and philosophical analyses on the question of the origins and evolution of the West’s legal traditions, but also offers original insights of its own. More and more, in spite of the declarations of secularist triumphalists, we are discovering that the institutions that have brought so much freedom and stability to the West are indeed a result of a complex set of historical traditions and practices evolving in dialogue with Christian institutions and ideas. This book describes the great flowering of Catholic life during the reign of Archbishop Carr, when Melbourne achieved pre-eminence among Australian Catholic archdioceses. The principal institutions, and the lay and clerical Catholics who helped achieve this leadership role, feature prominently in this narrative. In addition, Melbourne became the focal point of Irish Catholic consciousness in Australia. After decades of great stability, Mannix arrived at a time when a cascading series of world events was jolting people out of their comfort zones, and at a place which had prepared itself for the first intrusion of Irish events into Australian public life. Mannix himself was not master of events; he was on a quick learning curve, and had to rapidly adjust to a new and unfamiliar environment. It argues that the concept of universalism, often referred to as “multiculturalism” in Australasia, North America, and Europe, presents inherent contradictions. Different cultures, with their distinct values and rights, can sometimes be fundamentally opposed, creating tensions that may threaten societal cohesion.

The author suggests that Western societies should focus on preserving the unique traditions and structures that have shaped their values, particularly the concept of individual rights. Rather than striving to accommodate every worldview, the book proposes prioritizing the preservation of the foundational elements that have historically defined the West. It notes that universal values, often considered a hallmark of the West, originated from specific Western contexts and cultures.

The book contrasts this approach with strategies employed by other civilizations, such as those in the Islamic world and China, where assimilation is emphasized to maintain cultural cohesion. It is a story of an ancient people who had come relatively late to democracy and who failed to respond to its ideals. The men of the Risorgimento had bequeathed to Italy all the outward forms of a modern democracy but the one basic thing they were unable to impart was its spirit. Thus in a land weakened by war, ravaged by ideological ardours, embittered by poverty and rendered aimless in its search for national identity, democracy went to the wall. It comes as no surprise that those political expressions which scorned the outward form of democracy were amongst the first victims of dictatorship. Thus the old Italian socialist movement was rent asunder with disunity and all its forms dissolved before the Duce. Yet it is a surprise that Sturzo’s party, which formally at least was dedicated to both the form and spirit of democracy, was so quickly smitten with the rest. The project, which grew into a series of three books, began with an examination of the native-born Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders who played key roles in these maritime events. However, further research revealed the involvement of additional Indigenous groups, including Torres Strait Islanders, Papuans, and South Sea Islanders (also known as Melanesians). Each group had unique interactions with Queensland’s maritime traffic, shaped by their participation in the region’s labor systems and colonial dynamics.

The study focuses on “marine incidents,” including injuries or deaths of crew members, damage to vessels, or breaches of maritime laws. As Queensland’s economy grew, labor demands shifted from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers to the importation of South Sea Islanders, which led to significant controversy. The ethical and legal questions surrounding the importation of Pacific Islander labor for the burgeoning sugar and cotton industries became central to the debate, with many viewing the system as a thinly veiled form of slavery. This series delves into these complexities, offering a thorough look at the historical and cultural impact of these Indigenous maritime encounters in Queensland’s colonial period.

Wyatt Earp : The little ship with many names by Trish Burgess

Paperback, 124 pages

Published in May 2020, $29.95

ISBN 9781925826937

Why a book about a ship called Wyatt Earp? The year 2019 marked the 100th anniversary since the launch of a solid, wooden ship built in 1918–1919 in Molde, Norway. At the time she was named M/S Fanefjord (Motorskip/Motorship). She was not built as a fishing vessel, as many have claimed, but as a useful coastal trading ship—an all-rounder! Initially carrying cargo from Norway to England, and then from England to France, she was then active trading around the European coast and as far north as Greenland. There was occasionally some fishing, particularly off Greenland in the summer of 1925, which was a notable season. Fanefjord was launched on 27 September 1919. A century after her launch, on 27 September 2019, the Australian Antarctic Division joined with the Norwegian Ambassador to Australia to host a luncheon in Hobart to commemorate this amazing little ship and her many legacies. In 1933, after an uneventful career as a merchant vessel, she caught the eye of the Australian explorer, Sir Hubert Wilkins. He was searching for a suitable ship on behalf of the wealthy American Lincoln Ellsworth. Wilkins had already been part of expeditions and flights in both the Arctic and Antarctic. Ellsworth, too, had been involved in several Arctic journeys and now had grand plans for Antarctic voyages of exploration and Antarctic aviation feats never before achieved. M/S Fanefjord, named M/V Wyatt Earp (Motor Vessel) by her new owner, went on to travel as far from her home port of Ålesund as was possible, making five trips to the Antarctic, four with Lincoln Ellsworth and Hubert Wilkins between 1933 and 1939 and one for the newly formed Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition in 1948–1949. As well as commemorating the centenary of her launching in Norway, the Hobart gathering also recalled that on 24 January 1959, nearly 40 years after she was launched and 60 years before the centenary event, the ship grounded on a stormy night, on a normally warm and sunny Queensland beach, never to sail again. It was to be her grave.

(From the Introduction)

Captain James Cook, R.N. It is determined entirely by the tastes of the compiler and by the breadth of his or her reading. This is especially the case when the topic is a very broad one, as is mine. There are, no doubt, many hundreds, if not thousands, of books and essays on the sea and on sailing, and my selection represents only a tiny fraction of the material available. I make no apology for this. It is simply the result of the brevity of a single human life and, in my case, of coming to an interest in the subject matter late in life. Not until I was sixty-five years old did I first board a sailing vessel and experience that highly specific sensation of gliding over water with only the sounds of lapping waves and the hum of keel and rigging.
Again, there is always a danger involved in selecting pieces for an anthology. The selector assumes that particular works or extracts of works will move the reader just as it moved him or her. But, of course, literary tastes vary—“in matters of taste”, goes the old maxim, “there can be no disputes”. One could overcome the problem by sticking to well-known and much-loved classics, whose popularity has stood the test of time. But then, where’s the point of producing yet another collection similar to the last? I have tried to steer a middle course in this matter, dispersing little-known authors amongst old favourites. This particular arrangement has certain advantages. The reader, coming across some obscure (to him or her) writer rubbing shoulders with an old favourite, might be pleasantly surprised to find just how well this new intruder measures up. There again, reading an anthology ought to be a voyage of discovery, opening new vistas.

In choosing this arrangement, I had a particular model in mind. As a young schoolboy, I was introduced to the various volumes of The Victorian School Reader. Each Reader was an anthology of prose and poetry where Henry Kendall might sit next to Shakespeare, or Henry Lawson to Charles Lamb. The effect was marvellous. I owe a great debt of gratitude to the compilers of those Readers, for they stimulated in me an interest in literature which was to be a source of inestimable pleasure over the ensuing decades. This present volume could never hope to match the achievements of those early Readers, but in attempting to emulate their particular approach, I hope that I might gain, for authors whose works deserve a wider audience, at least a few new admirers.

The reader of this collection will quickly note that I have limited myself to older accounts of sailing and of the sea—few of the extracts are later than the 1950s. This was a deliberate choice. There have been some epic sailing adventures in more modern times, but I have omitted them in favour of an era lacking satellite tracking and other modern navigation guides, radio communication, and sophisticated sea rescue methods. There is something in that mix of real danger and human determination which gives the older accounts a sharper edge. I have also omitted accounts of racing yachts though there are many fine accounts available. This again, reflects my own interests. I have not a competitive bone in my body. Mark Twain once quipped that it is “difference of opinion that makes horse-races”. I feel the same about yacht racing.

My limited purpose in making this collection was to gather together some of those accounts which have moved me by their eloquence in describing the business of sailing and the moods and phenomena of the sea. Not all of my extracts are written by sailors; Freya Stark, for instance, was not a sailor, but her ability to paint, in word-pictures, the moods of the sea and the characteristics of sailing vessels, is unparalleled. Some of my chosen authors are little-known. H.C. Barkley wrote a couple of little-known works for young people but his description of a wild storm and of a ship-wreck is superb. Likewise, the Irish author, Maurice O’Sullivan, is little known today, but his Twenty Years A-Growing was once considered a classic. The collection includes the work of some sadly neglected Australian writers. Here, I have deviated a little from my stated purpose by including an account of a river journey by paddleboat, but the spirit of a sea adventure is there.

In my selection, I have exhibited an unashamed bias towards accounts dealing with the ancient world. Like my sailing and boat-building, I came to Homer at a late age, and it was a revelation. The Odyssey and Iliad contain some of the most beautiful, short descriptions of the sea and its creatures that have ever been recorded. Who has not heard of “the wine-dark sea”; who has not been moved by that lovely description, “down the shore of the sounding sea”? I sometimes think that all Western literature is, in a sense, merely footnotes to Homer, for in Homer is the seedbed of all human experience. For this and for other reasons mentioned above, my chosen extracts follow no strict chronological order. In sailing, the old and the new are always companionable, for the experience is unaltered.

But, more than anything else, the experience of sailing alone on the vast expanse of the ocean or walking alone along the shore of that “sounding sea” engenders the activity of reflection and of human imagination. “Life”, Plotinus said, “is the flight of the alone to the alone”. True enough: when the winds are strong, the sailor must devote all of his or her attention to the task, but in placid weather, the gentle lap of waves, the gurgling wake, the caress of soft airs and the immensity of the surrounding waters, brings on that pensive mood of personal reflection. I have tried, in making my selections, to include such experiences. This reflective mood is no better exemplified than in the writings of Hilaire Belloc. Many readers will be surprised to see him represented here, but he was more than just a fine sailor; he had a rare ability to represent, in the written word, that sort of deep longing that so often accompanies an experience of beauty or tranquillity. C.S. Lewis once described it as “an unsatisfied desire which is itself more desirable than any other satisfaction”. And so, coming into port, or dropping anchor, has a much deeper significance for Belloc and the spiritual quest is never far away. This, too, will explain my inclusion of Tennyson’s Crossing the Bar and an extract from Matthew Arnold’s Dover Beach.

At the other extreme, the men sailing on the large merchantmen had that experience of living in close contact with their comrades—working together, sleeping in the same cramped quarters and, in the little leisure time available to them, relaxing in the same forecastle. Here, too, were men from every corner of the globe, from every conceivable background and holding diverse philosophies and religious beliefs. Perhaps no-one has better explored the group psychology attending this situation than Joseph Conrad in his novels.

No-one knows when humans first took to sailing in boats. Perhaps it was the ancient Egyptians or Phoenicians. Certainly, by Homer’s time it was one of the main means of commerce in the Mediterranean. Commercial sailing reached its zenith in the age of the great clippers and then declined as the age of steam overtook it. The steamers, in turn, gave way to oil power. Today, large sailing ships are, for the most part, museum pieces, sailing for the tourist trade. The more romantically inclined among my readers will, like me, see this as a sort of regression, and they will then understand why I have included John Masefield’s Cargoes. But the age of sail is not dead. Small sailing boats are still very popular, kept alive in large measure by the sport of competitive sailing. Even where I live, in north-central Victoria, we have a sailing club and an inland lake to enjoy the sport. Each year, a cohort of young boys and girls is introduced to sailing at our club. I hope that they might, one day, come to love the sheer enjoyment of sailing, for its own sake and experience, as my chosen authors have experienced, that special sense of unity with a vessel that only sailing can give. For a boat under sail is almost a living thing, as many of my chosen extracts seek to demonstrate.

My first sailing boat, a Hartley 16, was called The Governor. The next and larger boat was, understandably, called The Governor General. Perhaps, before I die, I might justifiably call my last boat The Governed, but I doubt it. No matter! When these ageing limbs can no longer haul in the main sheet or hold the tiller in a hard wind, I will have my books. With these, I can sit in my chair and sail the world. It is my hope that the reader of this collection can do likewise.

Finally, I must acknowledge my debt to Maurice Nestor, formerly of La Trobe University, who acquainted me with several excellent books on sailing and the sea. It centred on a notorious novel – finally published this week some 54 years later – about the catastrophic Labor Split of the 1950s, written by the famous journalist Alan Reid. It was called The Bandar Log in an allusion to the vicious chattering monkeys of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. The subtitle makes its theme clearer: ‘A Labor Story of the 1950s’. Reid personalised the story as a war to the death between the attack dog of the Labor Left who was obviously meant to be Dr H.V. Evatt and the hero of the anti-communists who was obviously Bob Santamaria. Reid’s problem was to find a publisher. The book publishing division of his employer Australian Consolidated Press would not take it on. They thought it would not sell. (‘We are not in the business of losing money.’) A second publisher, Angus & Robertson, was keen. They even thought it might win the Miles Franklin Prize. But as Reid tells the story, one day an old Labor cobber sidled up to him in King’s Hall in the old Parliament House and whispered: ‘It’s not coming out!’ He was right. A&R finally turned the book down as defamatory. Then unexpectedly a third publisher turned up, P.J. Atkins of Cleveland Press, who said he thought there might be a quid in it. (Atkins was President of the Democratic Labor Party in NSW.) He wanted to publish it in time for the 1960 Christmas trade. But suddenly Atkins’ printer – Halstead Press, owned by A&R – followed A&R’s ruling that the book defamed prominent public figures. It refused to go on with the printing. The publisher thereupon sued Halstead Press for damages for breach of contract. The case came before the District Court. Despite great expectations the court-room drama was low-key, even dull. The principal witness for the printer was the literary scholar Dr Colin Roderick, a director of Angus & Robertson. He painstakingly showed how closely the fictional characters mirrored and defamed actual public figures such as Dr Evatt and Bob Santamaria. The cross-examining barrister for the publisher – the formidable Tom Hughes, later Attorney-General in the federal Liberal government – argued that the characters were definitely not portraits of real people. They were simply political types that turn up everywhere in politics from Washington to Westminster, from Canberra to the Kremlin – the wheeler-dealer, the fanatic, the madman, the fixer, the opportunist, the ideologue, the double-crosser, the stooge, the sycophant, the jackal or whatever. But despite Hughes’ aggressive and lengthy cross-examination, Roderick stuck doggedly to his observation that the characters were thinly disguised portraits of actual politicians in Canberra. When I wrote up the case for the Bulletin of September 1961 I reported that ‘it seemed at times as if Dr Roderick was being subjected to an extremely stiff Leaving Certificate examination in textual criticism’ – and passing.

But rereading my piece after 54 years, I see I did not do justice to the contest. My divided loyalties got in the way. My sympathies were with Reid. He was a colleague at the Bulletin and although I often, and increasingly, disagreed with him, I wanted to see his novel published. But I was also convinced that Colin Roderick was right that the characters in the novel were portraits of real public figures – not only Evatt and Santamaria but also Arthur Calwell, Eddie Ward, Gough Whitlam, and Dr John Burton among others. I did not put my by-line on the report. We presented it as ‘From a Sydney Correspondent’. Readers today, more than 50 years later, will probably consider The Bandar Log as hard-hitting if dated commentary. But in 1961, at the time of would-be publication, it was an inflammatory and libellous, if accurate, account by an insider. The Judge found the book was defamatory and dismissed the claim for damages.

It was a triumph for Dr Roderick. Consider the portrait of Evatt: ‘…brilliantly mad, pursued by a sense of historic destiny. Subtle, a self-deceiver. Haunted by the lust for earthly power and a desire for immortality in the memory of man… he would not let what to him were the trifles of normal standards of morality and the little decencies of human existence stand between him and the end he was pursuing… shifty moody, sombre and morose…’

After the hearing in the District Court, Reid returned his manuscript to the bottom drawer, to be forgotten and apparently lost to history. But a copy of the printer’s galley proofs survived among the Roderick papers in the Mitchell Library – ignored by historians until recently discovered by Ross Fitzgerald [who with Stephen Holt had a few years ago published the biography Alan (‘The Red Fox’) Reid.] Fitzgerald corrected the proofs and edited the novel again. Connor Court has now published it, at long last, with a Foreword by Prime Minister Abbott (who calls Reid ‘the Paul Kelly of his day’), an Introduction by Fitzgerald and Holt (who find the novel ‘surprisingly relevant today’), and a Postscript by Laurie Oakes (who notes Reid’s ‘extraordinarily bleak’ picture of Canberra politics – ‘filthy and disgusting… a sewer’.) One point is clear: the novel, wooden, creaky and didactic, has little literary merit, but it evokes the spirit of Labor politics in the 1950s. It is a document that will be of lasting interest to students of Australian politics. How many more such documents are still out there, in library archives or family garages, waiting to be discovered?

Dharma Democracy : How India Built the Third World’s First Democracy by Salvatore Babones

Paperback, 290 pages, $39.95

ISBN 9781923224735

Release Date: May 2025

Dharma is the basis of democracy which Asia must recognize, for in this lies the distinction between the soul of Asia and the soul of Europe. – Sri Aurobindo Ghose

India is one of the world’s great democratic success stories.
