When an Irish Catholic nun, fearful she was about to be murdered by her mother superior, fled her convent in Wagga Wagga and sought the protection of the Orange lodge, she sparked a sectarian war that divided the Australian nation. Arrested as a lunatic at the request of her bishop she was declared sane by the Lunacy Court and released. She then sued the bishop for damages in the Supreme Court in a case that lasted two weeks and attracted the attention of the press across Australia and around the world. In parliament, demands by opposition members for an inquiry into Catholic convents led to threats of violence between Catholic and Protestant MPs. When the nun’s brother kidnapped her off a suburban Sydney street, intending to take her back to her family in Ireland, the police intervened. But when the brother was allowed to leave the country without charge, the opposition moved a censure motion that threatened to bring down the Labor government.

Australia’s greatest religious controversy of [the 20th century]’

– Alan Gill, Sydney Morning Herald

‘Her story is fantastical – I think she’s a very strong woman who needs to be put up on a pedestal. In 13 years leading the Labor Party in Australia’s largest state, Wran did not lose an election or lose a seat at a by-election. His government (1976-1986) is acknowledged as a reformist administration. Wran’s political influence extended beyond NSW. He was elected Federal President of the ALP and the “Wran model” – moderate, stable, fiscally cautious but progressive government – was a template for a new generation of Labor leaders in other States.

Despite this record, it is now commonplace for journalists to describe the Wran Government as a “byword for corruption” and “riddled with corruption”. Journalists and others have also claimed that Wran was personally corrupt. An ABC TV documentary alleged Wran had a friendly relationship with prominent crime figure Abe Saffron; had covered up Saffron’s involvement in the Luna Park fire; and had delivered a new lease for the park to a Saffron-linked company. A former NSW chief magistrate has claimed “corruption got into the magistracy under Wran”.

Was Wran corrupt? Did he run a corrupt administration? The book answers these questions by critically and forensically examining various incidents and events that have caused people to question his honesty. Each chapter effectively stands on its own; each addressing what Wran himself called a “log of allegations of corruption”. These include Wran’s reluctance to reform the NSW Police Force and his controversial promotion of a senior policeman later found to be corrupt; his long-standing friendship with controversial bookmaker Bill Waterhouse; the Luna Park ghost train fire conspiracy; the Street Royal Commission and alleged corruption within the magistracy; an allegation arising from “the Age tapes”; the jailing of his corrective services minister, Rex Jackson; and alleged favours for media moguls, including the introduction of Lotto. One chapter details how Wran built his wealth since the size of his estate has also fed claims he must have been corrupt.

The book contains much previously unpublished material. Access to unreported file notes of the head of the Premier’s Department alters the common narrative that the Wran Government dragged its feet in investigating Federal Police wiretaps revealing possible corruption of a prisoner early-release scheme. A previously secret report by a federal Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry, released in 2017 but unreported until now, exonerates Wran on an allegation arising from “the Age tapes” that he promoted a public servant at the urging of controversial solicitor Morgan Ryan. Details of Wran’s wealth and the dispute over his will are revealed.

The book will be controversial since it is critical, supported by evidence, of the work of prominent journalists, including Andrew Rule, Kate McClymont, Tony Jones, Bob Bottom and Rodney Tiffen. One chapter demolishes, in forensic detail, allegations made by a lauded ABC-TV documentary of Wran’s supposed involvement in the Luna Park fire tragedy. Another chapter similarly pulls apart claims by a former NSW chief magistrate, Clarrie Briese, that the Street Royal Commission got it wrong when it exonerated Wran on claims he perverted the course of justice. Allegations made against two Wran Government ministers, in books published after their deaths, are also forensically examined and shown to have no credible foundation.

The final chapter summarises the findings of the author’s detailed examination of these various “whacks on the coffin lid”. His massive immigration program in the immediate postwar period began the transformation of Australia into a multicultural nation. Calwell served under the best (Chifley) and possibly the most difficult (Evatt) of the Labor leaders, and remained loyal to the Labor cause when it split in the mid 1950s when its future looked bleak. Yet, after becoming leader in 1960 he almost defeated then Prime Minister Menzies at the 1961 election and did much to restore Labor’s faith in itself as well as to renew policy for the nation. However, two subsequent election defeats in 1963 and 1966 meant Calwell had to make way for the younger Gough Whitlam in 1967. He retired at the 1972 election which saw Labor finally back in office. What are Australia’s people like – nice or naughty, friendly or hostile, generous or stingy? What are Australia’s social and cultural norms, and what are her politics? Almost three decades ago Christo Moskovsky was this complete newcomer and since then he has been trying to answer questions like these. This book contains Christo's impressions, observations and insights generated over the course of his Australian journey, as well as a broader commentary on social, cultural and political aspects of life in Australia. It is specifically Christo’s pre-Australian life experience which affords him a unique vantage point and a greater capacity to appreciate the true greatness of Australia. Peter Reith AM, Former Australian Minister for Defence

Charlie Hardy was a blacksmith’s assistant from Sydney, Australia. In his War Diaries he recorded his progress from a happy-go-lucky boy to a hard-bitten, military veteran in that terrible conflict, the Great War of 1914-1918. At Gallipoli he writes the words: “Allah Allah they yell & when they know they are beaten they throw down their arms and want to be taken prisoners but Australians don’t take Prisoners”. Charlie was an ordinary man involved in extraordinary events and this book weaves his diary entries into a comprehensive and informative history of the War – particularly the Gallipoli Campaign and the tragic Battle of Fromelles which was the worst single day in Australian military history. Charlie participates in the famous, heroic rear-guard action during this Battle, helping save hundreds of Australian lives, made even more poignant by the historical coincidence that Adolf Hitler was in opposing trenches to Charlie’s company.

Donald Trump : The Ultimate Contrarian by Richard Alston

Paperback, 114 pages

ISBN: 9781922449832

Release Date: December 2021

Donald Trump’s term as president of United States ended in disgrace. At its heart is a day-by-day account of a dramatic court case the outcome of which was to set Savage Resources the junior company on its trajectory. Major companies such as Western Mining Corporation, Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Pasminco and Union Miniere, all of whom are no more, played important roles. Other episodes also play a part including a young Pommy geologist’s introduction to Queensland, the evaluation of a bat guano deposit in caves in Malaysia for clients who were not what they seemed to be and Kerry Packer’s rubies. Commentators generally describe it as resulting from federal issues. But it began in Victoria, involved predominantly Victorians, and left its deepest mark in that state. A balanced conclusion with decades of hindsight is that: “The Labor Party Split of the 1950s was fundamentally a Victorian phenomenon” (Costar, Love and Strangio, 2005: 23). The dispute became public in February 1955 when Premier Cain and other Labor leaders in Victoria resigned from the ALP state executive in protest following its vote criticising ALP Federal Parliamentary Leader Bert Evatt. It then degenerated into a bitter argument between popularly elected Labor leaders and a Catholic dominated machine that later became the Democratic Labor Party (DLP).

In March 1955 the DLP supporters in the Victorian parliament elected as their leader Hon. P.L. (Les) Coleman OBE, who was a member of the Legislative Council. During the previous two years he had organised the Queen’s visit to Victoria and played a key role in preparations for the 1956 Olympic Games. He was the subject of public speculation as Melbourne lord mayor and Victorian premier, successful in business, active in numerous charities and widely regarded as one of the best ministers in the state Labor government. Perhaps most significantly, virtually all his close political friends continued to support the ALP. But he surprised them and observers by throwing this away to follow a group with which he seemed to have little, apart from religion, in common.

This is Les Coleman’s story. It began as a family history and narrowed to focus on Coleman, my grandfather. I remember him as a kindly old man, reserved and quiet. Like many I have pondered the reason why he chose to support the nascent Democratic Labor Party in what was neatly described by his friend Hector Crawford as “my riddle with Les Coleman”. That, in fact, encapsulates my research question: Why did Coleman follow the DLP group out of the ALP in 1955?

The answer comes mostly in the words of those who knew him and participated in the events in question. My researches took me to almost 40 people who knew Coleman and worked with him in parliament and outside. Interviews with them were conducted during 1984–86, some ten years after Coleman’s death, and were specifically structured to seek opinions and judgements of his activities and of the political times in which he lived. Those interviewed included eight of Coleman’s relatives, four South Melbourne identities, two members of the 1945-1947 Cain cabinet, three members of the 1952-1955 Cain cabinet, four of the Victorian MPs expelled from the ALP with Coleman, secretaries of the two Victorian transport unions in 1954, two members of the 1956 Olympic Games Organising Committee and other key figures of the time. As a clear indication of how transient oral history is, all but a couple of those whom I interviewed are now deceased.

I must acknowledge the generosity and openness of those who agreed to meet me: only two refused and both courteously. Most of those interviewed asked that some of their comments not be attributed. This has been respected and the points they made were checked and appear anonymously in the text, with published references as support whenever possible.

I found that some memories had inevitably faded; most reminiscences contained a measure of evaluation and explanation.

Many historians rightly question the validity of such oral history. My response is that this work provides a unique perspective that supplements other analyses. In particular it enables focus on the human side of the Split by tracing personal and political associations, motivations and allegiances, which are typically overlooked in political analyses that assume clinical calculus underlies decisions. Moreover, this dispute is one of many important political episodes

that have left a slim paper trail. Certainly there are leaflets, press

cuttings, minutes and the like. But participants wrote down little of what happened; and few secondary documents can convey the motivation, personal dealings, alliances and rivalries that determine conduct. Thus the most authoritative text on the events of this period, The Split by Robert Murray (1970), is largely based on oral history and secondary sources such as newspapers.

I also covered archives at several locations in Victoria, and in Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra; and drew heavily on newspapers and other secondary sources. Unfortunately Coleman left few personal papers. He was an only child and his wife and their only child died before this work started, so close family recollections were not available for much of his life. Even after considerable research, I was left with uncertainties. In part this was due to Coleman himself. He was not a gregarious or assertive man, and so – despite his influence and achievements – there are few mentions of him in published and unpublished books. The exception is a diary by Roy Rawson MLC which gives insights into Coleman’s character and role in parliament. Moreover the primary sources relating to Coleman, his contemporaries and their activities are remarkably sparse as is shown by even a cursory look at bibliographies in books covering the political events of this era.

The result is largely my interpretation of what others thought of Coleman and recalled of his political times. It is oriented towards his public life, and his political interests and activities. This has left room for only light treatment of his private business interests (of which the Port Phillip Hotel was perhaps the best known); the leading role he played in organising Melbourne’s Olympic Games; and charitable work which gained him life governorships of three prominent institutions.

I have tried to be objective, but readers should be aware that even with the best of intentions this is not always possible when profiling a close relative. Conversely no biographer is ever objective because each is forced to choose their material from a plethora of information and conclusions. Moreover, this history – like all others – has gaps and limitations from lack of knowledge; and – without being able to test hypotheses – is descriptive. Whilst my analysis identifies compelling causal links, none can be established with certainty.

P.L. Law may vary from place to place but the basic rule of procedural fairness – a party’s right to be heard – is common to most legal systems. The best advocates know how to tell a story because the rule depends on stories being told well. Nicholas Hasluck draws upon the works of many writers, including some of his own novels, in exploring this theme. In doing so, he provides a graphic account of the relationship between law and literature, and the way in which the art of persuasion will not only be of use to lawyers but to all those with an interest in the nature of law and justice.

Nicholas Hasluck was born in Canberra. Molony put to him the question ‘Do you think a Catholic political party would have a future in Australia?’ His negative reply was immediate, direct and decisive. It is a story of an ancient people who had come relatively late to democracy and who failed to respond to its ideals. The men of the Risorgimento had bequeathed to Italy all the outward forms of a modern democracy but the one basic thing they were unable to impart was its spirit. Thus in a land weakened by war, ravaged by ideological ardours, embittered by poverty and rendered aimless in its search for national identity, democracy went to the wall. It comes as no surprise that those political expressions which scorned the outward form of democracy were amongst the first victims of dictatorship. Thus the old Italian socialist movement was rent asunder with disunity and all its forms dissolved before the Duce. Yet it is a surprise that Sturzo’s party, which formally at least was dedicated to both the form and spirit of democracy, was so quickly smitten with the rest. To some it would come as an even greater surprise that the Italian fascist state and the Vatican worked hand in hand to help destroy the Partito Popolare.

The Peter Nixon Story by Peter Nixon

Foreword by Geoffrey Blainey

Published in June 2012
Hardcover, 341 pages
ISBN 9781921421600

In his autobiography Peter Nixon traces the story of his life from early childhood to the present day. He begins by recounting his upbringing on a farm in East Gippsland and school years in Melbourne where suffered a life changing hip injury. Peter then reflects on the beginnings of his career in federal politics where he first made his name as a public figure. Readers will learn that Peter was initially reluctant to run for parliament, but quickly warmed to representing his constituency and embraced the challenges of federal politics. He gives readers an insider's account of federal politics where he was first elected during the Menzies' years and served as Minister for the Interior, Transport and Primary Industry in the Holt, McEwen, Gorton, McMahon and Fraser governments. He also recounts the disastrous years of the Whitlam government and its eventual dismissal in 1975. Peter addresses the big political issues during his time as a Minister and now. He clearly and unwaveringly argues that changes made by the Whitlam government to aboriginal policy were misguided and have turned out to be self-destructive, that Sir John Kerr's dismissal of Gough Whitlam was constitutionally and morally correct, and that Australia is best served by its existing system of government rather than becoming a republic. While politics was an important part of his life, Peter's diverse career in the private sector career is equally interesting. As a commissioner of the VFL and AFL, Peter was part of important decisions that transformed the game of Australian Rules Football from struggling state competitions in Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia into a highly successful national code. He also served the public by giving expert advice to state and federal governments, organising the statue commemorating Weary Dunlop and leading Australians for Constitutional Monarchy. Peter Nixon writes clearly and engagingly, and his autobiography will be of interest to anyone seeking to learn more about a fascinating period of Australian history. "Sir Earle Page and Sir Arthur Fadden each wrote their autobiography, but it is probably more than fifty years since a leading National Party politician has chewed the cud.
